Title: Text-to-Map: A Hands-on Session on Mapping for the Humanities

Short description: This hands-on session will walk participants through the steps involved in creating a map from a text. Participants will learn key methodologies in geospatial humanities, including how to extract geodata from a text, how to organize and enrich spatial data using spreadsheets, and how to visualize that data on a variety of user-friendly, open-access mapping platforms. Renaissance texts will be used to demonstrate the potential of each platform and to discuss the possibilities and drawbacks of merging GIS-based methodologies and early modern spatial thought. Participants will also gain access to useful resources that they can implement in their research and teaching.

Please bring your laptops and any text you would like to work with (modern spelling is preferred). This session is intended for beginners.
